This Week 

  • MONDAY - 
    • After school - ATTEND  Trick-or-Treating Event at Homewood Central Park, hosted by Hwd City Schools. HHS boys & girls basketball teams and cheerleaders will be handing out candy... DJ Coach Sills will provide entertainment.. and local bakeries will have sweet treats for the kids to sample. 
  • TUESDAY -
    • 8:30-10:00am - ATTEND "The United States of NUMB" at the Homewood Board of Education (450 Dale Avenue). A parenting program addressing current trends in adolescent substance abuse, sponsored by the Safe & Healthy Homewood Coalition, presented by Angela Camp from Bradford Health Services. Get details on the usual suspects (alcohol and marijuana) as well as the "new kids" on the block.  See common hiding methods, recognize drug paraphernalia, and learn how to identify signs of use and abuse.     • 7:00pm - ATTEND Mandatory Band Meeting for Macy's Trip Travelers. Parents and students to meet in the large auditorium. 
  • WEDNESDAY - HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 
  • THURSDAY - 
    • 9am - 1pm - ATTEND Birmingham College Scholarship and Career Fair at the Boutwell Auditorium. For additional information, see this flyer.
  • FRIDAY -
    • 2:20pm - ATTEND the Pep Rally
    • DUE - TheSchool Counseling Department is required to complete a needs assessment with parents, students and faculty members.  The data from the needs assessment will assist in the development of program goals.  Please use this link to access the online PARENT needs assessment. (Students will receive a needs assessment through Schoology that will have similar questions, but in a check the box format.)
    • POSTED -  2nd 9wks INTERIM grades will be posted by the end of the day Friday. Reports are not sent home.  Parents will need to check the INOW Home Portal.
  • EVERY DAY - HERE'S THE LIST of students who still have paid-for Homecoming shirts hanging out in Mrs. Kreider's room (241). Pick up during 5th period.

  • SPORTS tryouts - Keep a watchful eye on the Daily Announcements for upcoming tryout dates, forms and physical requirements.

  • YEARBOOK candid photos - Parents, if you take pictures at any of the school related events, please consider emailing them to Melissa Dameron-Vines, mdameron-vines@homewood.k12.al.us, for possible publication in the yearbook. The yearbook staff can never have enough photos! The first publication deadline is in November.
  • DUE Nov 10th - Miss Heritage registration. The online form can be found HEREThe pageant is Sat, Dec 1st and the winner will be awarded a $1500 scholarship!  If you have questions, see Mr. Thorne.
  • Nov 14thThe Academy of Craft Training will be on campus to share information about their program during all study periods. 

 

*Grade-Level Announcements*

  11th -

  • Tues Oct 30th - "Finding the Right College Fit"  - a college planning program for Juniors and their parents, 6pm-7 in the Bailey Theater at HHS.  Additional topics include: standardized testing, NCAA eligibility, financial aid & scholarships, resources, and a Junior year timeline. 

  12th -  

  • GET HELP with the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) - Thurs, Nov 1st  Experts from local colleges will be on hand to help parents work on the FAFSA.  This need-based financial aid application opens doors for scholarships, grants, work study, and loan options.  Every family, regardless of income, is encouraged to complete the FAFSA.  Some colleges require completion of the FAFSA for scholarship consideration.  It is best to complete the FAFSA by early December.  Parents interested in attending should contact Elaine Meeks emeeks@homewood.k12.al.us  for additional information.
  • GET HELP with college applications  - in the Media Center during 5th period  In support of the state-wide College Application Campaign Week, several colleges are waiving application fees (see counselors for a list of participating schools). HHS counselors will be present to answer questions as well as to help students complete any college application. College reps will also be available on the following days:  
    • Mon - University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama State University, Lawson State Community College, University of Montevallo
    • Tues - Jacksonville State University
    • Wed - Mississippi State University 
    • Thurs - Jefferson State Community College
  • DEADLINE FYI - Nov 2nd is the next deadline for both the December SAT (1st) and ACT (8th).  
  • SCHOLARSHIP FYI - The Alabama Leaders in Educational Technology (ALET) organization invites graduating seniors interested in pursuing a career in computer science, information technology, or other technology-related fields to apply for its $10,000 Debbie Rice Memorial Scholarship. Follow the link for criteria and guidelines. The deadline for submission is Nov 16th.
  • PLEASE RETURN your senior portrait proofs to Belmont Studios. This must be done by December 1 in order for your portrait to appear in the yearbook!

Teachers Gettin'   Their Snack On!

Thank you so much to our wonderful hospitality volunteers that provided much-needed snacks for  teachers on Parent Teacher Conference Day. Special shout out to volunteer Paige Wilcutt for helping with set up!  
 

Fri, Nov 16th - 11:30-1pm Chili Cook-off 

 Parents will compete in a Chili Cook-Off with our teachers as judges. Entry fee is $25 and the winner is allowed to donate prize money to their favorite high school organization.
