*School-Wide Announcements*

This Week 

  • MONDAY the 4th - DEADLINE for Teacher Impact Award nominations.  The Homewood City Schools Foundation selects one teacher from each school to recognize for their exemplary service each spring through the Teacher Impact Award. Please consider nominating a teacher that has had a positive impact on your student's life.  The nomination form is available HERE.
  • FRIDAY the 8th - DEADLINE to turn in tryout forms for HHS Cheerleading.  Information can be found on the HHS Athletics webpage.   If you have any questions please see Ms. Appell in room 262. Forms to be turned in at the Front Office. 

Looking Ahead

  • Feb 22nd - 'Teen Marijuana Use: Impact on the Developing Brain', an educational workshop hosted by The Safe & Healthy Homewood Coalition. Local pediatrician and addiction expert, Dr. Shannon Murphy, will be speaking from 11:30am-1:00pm at the Homewood Board of Education office. The program will be recorded.

 

*Grade-Level Announcements*

9th - 

  • Mrs. Mills from the Guidance Department will be visiting with Freshmen during their World History classes to discuss graduation requirements and to update 4-year plans as follows:
    • Jan 23 & 24 - McBride
    • Jan 30 & 31 - Delahay
    • Feb 7 & 8 - Doyle

11th - 

  • TESTING Feb 20th - The ACT will be administered to all Juniors, at no cost.  You should have received a letter from the school via mail with details about the test and the testing day. 

12th -  

  • PICK UP  - Balfour Senior Graduation Invitations have arrived and are in the guidance office. 
  • URGENT!!!IF your student hasn't ordered their cap and gown for graduation (would have done this in mid-October), then please do so as soon as possible by directly contacting Balfour (205-981-9868).  If you need to verify an order, please contact Balfour for that, as well!

***COLLEGE PREP & SCHOLARSHIPS*** 

  • HOT OFF THE PRESS!!!  Click the link for updated who, what, when, where for spring college campus preview events, many of which are THIS MONTH. Also, scholarships and summer learning programs are outlined. 
  • HHS GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT WEBPAGE on the school website from the Guidance Department regarding scholarship opportunities, college/military visits, summer programs, and special campus visit events.
  • DEADLINE Mar 1st - Rotary Club of Shades Valley Scholarship
  • DEADLINE Mar 20th - Dr. Jodi Newton Scholarship and Jody Atchison Scholarship
  • DEADLINE  June 1st  - The Furman Scholars Program will select outstanding students for a $20,000 annual scholarship x 4 years to attend Furman University. CLICK HERE for information and online application.  Ms. Voltz or Dr. Brooks will need to assist in the nomination process. Please see one of them in the Guidance office. 
  • DEADLINE June 14th - to apply for the Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program, awarding up to $1,000 to the winner(s) each year. Visit this websitefor application and essay details.

 

*** SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES*** 

  • UPDATED LISTING with some great information...check it out!
  • DEADLINE Mar 15th for nominations to Alabama Governor's School... a highly selective 2-week residential honors program, funded by Samford University, that chooses the best students from around the state to take challenging seminars and participate in creative, team-building activities. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet new people, gain new experiences, and learn new things that will stay with them throughout their lives.
