*School-Wide Announcements*

This Week 

  • MONDAY - HWD SCHOOLS CLOSED in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday.
  • WEDNESDAY - Deadline to apply for the Academy of Craft Training Open House Event on Jan 29th.  Any student interested in attending should speak with Dr. Delisa Brooks or Ms. Whitney Volt in the School Counseling Office.  
  • THURSDAY "Stress, Anxiety and Teens", 8:30-10am, Homewood Board of Education on Dale Ave. This is an educational parent program presented by the Safe & Healthy Homewood Coalition. Licensed Professional Counselor, Alice Churnock, will teach parents how to help their teen develop healthy coping skills to manage stress and avoid alcohol and other drug use.
  • FRIDAY - Deadline to register for YMCA's Lifeguard Certification course if interested in life guarding this summer. See this flyer for details, then visit Dr. Delisa Brooks in the School Counseling Office.  

Looking Ahead

  • Feb 4th - Deadline for Teacher Impact Award nominations.  The Homewood City Schools Foundation selects one teacher from each school to recognize for their exemplary service each spring through the Teacher Impact Award. Please consider nominating a teacher that has had a positive impact on your student's life.  The nomination form is available HERE.
  • March 15th - DEADLINE for nominations to Alabama Governor's School... a highly selective 2-week program that chooses the best students from around the state to take challenging seminars and participate in team building activities. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet new people, gain new experiences, and learn new things that will stay with them throughout their lives.   • May 4th - Alabama STEM Education Expose’ will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex,   CLICK HERE to register for the event.  The deadline date is not January 15, 2019 as indicated on the website.  Please contact Mrs. Juanita Graham at 205-436-2107 or email   ï»¿alabamastemeducation@gmail.com  for additional information about this event.   

 

*Grade-Level Announcements*

9th - 

  • Mrs. Mills from the Guidance Department will be visiting with Freshmen during their World History classes to discuss graduation requirements and to update 4-year plans as follows:
    • Jan 23 & 24 - McBride
    • Jan 30 & 31 - Delahay
    • Feb 7 & 8 - Doyle

10th, 11th & 12th - 

  • DEADLINE Feb 1st - to apply for PHARMACY CAMP at Samford University. Learn more about it here.  Questions? Call 205-726-2008 or email pharmacycamp@samford.edu

11th -

  • TESTING Feb 20th - The ACT will be administered to all Juniors, at no cost.  You should have received a letter from the school via mail with details about the test and the testing day. 
  • NEED ACT PREP for the test on the 20th? HERE is an option. Class starts THIS TUESDAY, so register NOW!
  • DEADLINE  June 1st  - The Furman Scholars Program will select outstanding students for a $20,000 annual scholarship x 4 years to attend Furman University. CLICK HERE for information and online application.  Ms. Voltz or Dr. Brooks will need to assist in the nomination process. Please see one of them in the Guidance office. 

11th & 12th - 

  • DEADLINE June 14th - ï»¿to apply for the Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program, awarding up to $1,000 to the winner(s) each year. Visit this website for application and essay details.

12th -  

 

***CONSTRUCTION CORNER***  

She's a definite work in progress. Most of the work is now being done underground. Hopefully, we will see some foundation work beginning
at the end of the month.
